How to Thaw a Turkey
With Thanksgiving coming, it’s important to thaw your turkey in plenty of time before the holiday. With that being said, there are a couple of ways you can thaw your bird and I will explain each method. Keep in mind that they are listed in order of preference.
- Thaw in the Refrigerator - This method will require appoximately 24 hours per 5 pounds of turkey. So, for example, a 20 pound turkey will require approximately 4 days to thaw. Keep the turkey in its plastic and place it in a shallow pan or on top of several paper towels. Place it in the refrigerator and check it about half way through to see if you can remove the package of innards from the cavity of the turkey. Keep those refrigerated if you plan on using them.
- Thaw in Cold Water - This method will require approximately 30 minutes per pound of turkey. So, in this case, a 20 pound turkey would take 10 hours (30 minutes x 20 pounds). Once again, keep the turkey in its original plastic packaging. Cover the turkey with cold water and change the water every 30 minutes until it is defrosted.
- Defrost in the Microwave - In this case you will need to read your owners manual for recommendations on defrost time and power. This is due to the variations in wattage on different microwaves. Just make sure that you remove all packaging from the turkey.
Once your turkey is defrosted, you can safely store it for up to 2 days before it must be cooked.
